Welcome back to school! I hope that you and your family enjoyed a wonderful summer and that your child is looking forward to their time in Year 6. We have a fun and engaging year planned, and I am really looking forward to teaching the children in their final year at Parsons Heath.

Teaching Team

To support your children in their learning, Mrs Thresher and Mrs Bentley will be working as teaching assistants in Year 6 throughout the week. On a Thursday, the children will be taught by Mrs Freeland (our SENCo). Mrs Savill will also be working with individuals and small groups to support them in their learning.

Curriculum

We have planned an exciting curriculum for the children to follow, details of which can be found on our school website. The focus of our morning sessions will be on English and Maths to ensure that the children are well prepared for secondary school. In the afternoons, we will be focusing on Science, RE and other Foundation Subjects.

In Science we will start by looking at Living Things and classification, in History we will be studying the local census and in Geography we will be focusing on population. We will be making automata toys and waistcoats in DT, exploring photography in Art and learning about programming and data in computing.

Reading

Your child will be bringing home their reading record along with their reading book. As the Autumn Term progresses, if you look inside the front cover of the reading record, there will also be other useful logins stuck in there (e.g. TT Rock Stars).

Reading is incredibly important to your child’s education and progress so please make sure that your child is reading at home as often as possible. Please log any of their reads in their reading record so that we can keep track of how much reading they are undertaking.

Homework

In Year 6, children will need to complete their Maths homework using an online programme called SATS Companion. It is a website that is matched to the content of the Year 6 maths curriculum. There are questions for the children to complete alongside helpful videos that explain key content. The children will bring login details home with them over the coming days, and I will show them how the website works so they can access it at home for their homework. The children will not be using the White Rose books that they used in Year 5.

Maths tasks will be set online each week, and these will be clearly shown in the Tasks tab. Homework will be set every Friday, starting from Friday 18^th September. Tasks need to be completed by the following Wednesday.

This year, the children will also be sent home spelling sheets to complete. The children will have one spelling sheet to complete each week and this will be sent home in a folder. All spelling homework will be based on the work we have completed in class. Again, these will be given out on Friday and need to be returned by the following Wednesday.

SATS

Towards the end of Year 6, the children will take their SATs tests. These tests are taken by all children at the end of their primary education and will test to see whether the children are at the expected standard for their age in Maths and English. SATs tests will take place in the week beginning 10^th May 2027 and therefore it is important that you do not book holidays during this time. Please be reassured that we will not be talking about the SATs with the children until well after Christmas and although we will be working hard towards them, the tests will be completed in a very relaxed environment. In the new year, we shall be holding a meeting regarding the tests; giving an opportunity for you to look at past papers, ask questions and find out how best to support your child in preparing for the SATs.

PE

Our PE sessions will be on Thursdays and Fridays, so please ensure that your child arrives to school wearing their PE kit on both those days. Lessons will be outside whenever possible, so please ensure that your child is wearing a tracksuit if the weather is forecast to be cold. Please remember that long hair needs to be tied back and that earrings cannot be worn during PE lessons. If children cannot take their earrings out independently then they will not be able to participate.

Residential trip

The children are so excited about their upcoming residential trip to Bawdsey Manor. Nearer the time, we will hold a Parents’ information meeting and will provide you with a comprehensive list of what they will need to bring.
