Welcome to Parsons Heath and the Reception class. I hope that you have had a lovely summer break and both you and your child are excited for their first year in big school!I will be teaching the class with support from Mrs Ciccone, Mrs Hamblion, Mrs Henderson and Mrs Walters. Mrs Acheson-Vickery will cover my PPA on a Tuesday afternoon.In Reception, we follow The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. This sets the statutory standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to five years old in England. The EYFS framework focuses on seven key areas, divided into Prime Areas and Specific Areas.

By the end of Reception, the aim is for your child to have reached the Early Learning Goals in all 7 areas and be ready to transition into Year 1.At Parsons Heath we teach phonics, reading and handwriting every day using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds scheme. Additionally, we follow CUSP which introduces the children to a wide range of vocabulary and reading skills using carefully selected texts. This is done through direct teaching, guided activities and independent play.The books we will be reading this term are:

This term in maths we will be exploring patterns, shape and numbers within 5. The children will be learning to count and to use 1:1 correspondence to develop accuracy. They will develop their ability to subitise, to recognise numerals and to link these with the idea of ‘how many’. We will think about shapes and how we can create not just shapes, but patterns and pictures. Again, the children will learn through direct teaching, guided activities and independent play. Children will be able to access all areas of learning by having the opportunity to try a range of activities in their indoor and outdoor environment and to develop their own ideas using available resources. They will have access to art materials, role play resources, toys and musical instruments. We will learn their favourite ways of expressing themselves and how they like to represent their ideas and experiences in play. This may be in the models they build, the stories they develop in their imaginative play, or in the musical or creative work they produce. The children will be encouraged to feel confident in working independently and to work as a team, developing ideas together.Your child will be having a weekly PE session on a Friday morning with a qualified sports coach. The classroom teaching assistants will be supporting the coach during this lesson. They should come into school dressed in their PE kits. Just to remind you that our school PE kit consists of navy-blue shorts and a plain white t-shirt and outdoor kit of navy joggers and hoodie. Plimsolls or trainers should be worn for PE sessions. Please ensure that long hair is tied back and earrings are not worn on PE days or that your child is able to remove them independently for the session. A small bag or container should also be provided so that children can keep their earrings safe.
- Reminders: Fruit will be available for your child each day and we will encourage them to eat a piece. However, you can provide your child with a snack to eat if you wish. We are part of the ‘Healthy Schools’ initiative and we ask that these are healthy snacks such as a piece of fruit or vegetable.
- We request that all items of uniform are clearly labelled with your child’s name. Often children will be wearing the same size jumpers and without names we cannot tell who they belong to.
- Please send your child into school with a named water bottle. We kindly request that they only bring water to school, not fruit juice or squash.
- If the weather continues to be kind to us, please apply sun cream to your child before they come to school. If you have any questions, queries or concerns about anything, then please do not hesitate to talk to me. I will always be at the gate at the beginning and end of the day or alternatively, make an appointment with the school office. I am looking forward to our Autumn term together.
