Autumn Term 2018
Once again, we have a busy year ahead. In this half term’s topic, ‘Reach for the Stars’, year 5 will be focusing on the wonders of space in both our Science and Topic sessions, and in English, we shall be reading the book ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce, leading to us ultimately writing newspaper reports on the subject of space. After half term, we will be thinking about our school Christian values.
We shall be having a special focus on Remembrance this year, as it is the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. You will be given more information about this and the special events we will be holding to commemorate it, later this half term. Please see the website for details of other subjects we shall be covering during the Autumn Term.
As you know, our school homework policy has changed, so tasks are now optional. I would encourage you, however, to endeavour to complete some of the suggested activities. The completed work should be returned on the dates given on the sheet. However, reading and spelling remain important in Upper Key Stage 2. I would ask that you please read with your child on a daily basis, questioning them on what they read, and ensuring that they understand the vocabulary being used, checking using a dictionary if necessary. Children are rewarded for regular reading through the school reading challenge which continues in Year 5. Spelling rules that we are working on in class may be practised using Spelling Frame at https://spellingframe.co.uk/. The rules being taught each week are shown on the homework sheet.
Our times tables superhero challenge also continues, and we shall have regular lessons focusing on the teaching and learning of times tables. Please take advantage of some of the lovely activities available on line, and through Times Tables Rockstars for which your child has their own login. If you have mislaid your login, please let me know and I shall re-issue it.
PE lesson will be on Friday afternoons and will be conducted by a qualified sports coach. Please make sure that your child has suitable kit including sports shoes suitable for outdoor use, and navy blue joggers and a hoodie in case it is cold. Just to remind you that our school PE kit consists of navy blue shorts and a plain white t shirt. All students should be able to remove their own earrings for these sessions. Please could you also make sure that long hair is tied back and that socks are provided for the girls when they wear tights?
I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year. If you have any concerns or queries, please do not hesitate to come and see me.
