Spring Term 2020

We are pleased to inform you that year 5 children will continue to be supported by their experienced team. Mrs Johnson will be teaching the class from Monday to Thursday with the support of Mrs Ambrose, and on Fridays, Mrs Gilbert will be teaching the class with Mrs Bentley. Mrs Savill will be teaching them French on Friday afternoons. Mrs Johnson will retain overall responsibility for planning and assessment for the class, so any questions or concerns should be addressed to her.

Once again, we have a busy term ahead of us.

Until half term, we will be studying Ancient Greece, looking at how this civilisation lived and the impact of their ideas on modern life. We will be examining Greek myths during our English lessons, responding to their messages and writing our own versions.

After half term, we will continue to have a history focus during our foundation subject lessons. We will be looking at the life and times of the Tudors, which was a significant period in the development of Britain, as well as being an extremely engaging topic.

In RE, we will be learning about the teachings of Islam, and our English work will link to this important area of religion.

Full details about our curriculum for this academic year may be found below on the curriculum map link.

Homework will be handed out on Fridays and should be returned the following Wednesday when it will be marked in class. The task should take no longer than 30 minutes and will either be an Arithmetic test or a reading comprehension. A half termly spelling list will also be included in the homework folder and these should be practised weekly. Children may still use https://spellingframe.co.uk/ activities to support their learning.

I would ask that you continue to read with your child on a daily basis, questioning them on what they read and ensuring that they understand the vocabulary being used, and checking using a dictionary if necessary.  Children are rewarded for regular reading through the school reading challenge which continues in Year 5.

Our times tables superhero challenge also continues, even though the children have now completed their times table test in Year 4. Please take advantage of some of the lovely activities available online and through Times Tables Rockstars for which your child has their own login. If you have mislaid your login, please let me know and I shall re-issue it.

PE lessons will be on Friday afternoons and will be taught by a qualified sports coach. Please make sure that your child has suitable kit including sports shoes suitable for outdoor use, navy blue joggers and a hoodie in case it is cold. Even during the winter months, we go outside whenever possible and we would like all children to be able to enjoy lessons as much as possible.

All students should be able to remove their own earrings for these sessions. Please could you also make sure that long hair is tied back and that socks are provided for the girls when they wear tights?

I am looking forward to working with the children again this half term after an enjoyable first term together. Should you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to me or make an appointment with the office so that we can speak after school.
