Summer Term 2019
As usual, our timetable is packed and our topics for the Summer Term are ‘Earth Rocks’ and ‘In It to Win It’. ‘Earth Rocks’ will focus primarily on developing the geographical skills of the children through a study of mountains, and in English we will be studying the works of William Shakespeare, with a focus on ‘The Tempest’. In Science we will be investigating reversible and irreversible changes. After the May half term, we will be developing our persuasive writing skills in English and examining the geography of North America, while in Science we will be looking at life cycles.
Homework tasks, though not compulsory, will help your child to share what they have been learning at school, with you at home. It is important that your children continue to practise their times tables using Times Table Rock Stars. This revisiting of skills will support children with more advanced learning in maths such as fractions, decimals and percentages. I would be grateful if you could also encourage your child to work on their spelling by using the online Spelling Frame activities. Regular reading will help to develop fluency and confidence and questioning them on what they read, and the vocabulary used, will help to improve comprehension and understanding. Children are rewarded for regular reading through the reading challenge which continues in Year 5, so please sign their book daily to show that they have read, either to you or independently.
PE sessions will again take place on Friday afternoons. Please ensure that your child is provided with the correct kit and suitable footwear for these lessons. Swimming will take place later this term, and a separate letter will be sent to you in due course.
I am looking forward to working with you and your child again this term. If you have any concerns or queries, please do not hesitate to come and see me.
