Summer Term 2018
As usual, our timetable is packed and our topic for the Summer Term is ‘Around the World’.
Our focus for the first half term will be on the Ancient Greeks and Outer Space, and in the second half of the term, we will look at American settlements. In English, we shall be comparing the styles of well-known poets and using them to help write poetry of our own based on outer space, as well as reading and writing a range of Greek myths. Our Science topics will focus on Space and Life Cycles.
Homework will be handed out as usual on Fridays and should be handed in the following Wednesday. The tasks set will build on the skills the children have worked on during the week in either Maths, English, Science or Topic work. Spellings and arithmetic will also be included and the activities should take about 30-40 minutes to complete. Please note that homework should be presented as neatly as classwork and completed in either pencil or black pen. It would be helpful if you could make a brief comment about how your child has coped with the activity each week so that additional support can be provided if required. If you are at all concerned about the homework, please have a word with me, and I will endeavour to help. If you are finding it hard to fit homework in at home, remember that Homework Club runs after school on Mondays, where staff are available to support your child with their tasks in these sessions.
In addition to the homework tasks, could I please encourage you to continue to read with your children on a daily basis, questioning them on what they read, and ensuring that they understand the vocabulary being used? Children are rewarded for regular reading through the reading challenge which continues in Year 5, so please sign their book daily to show that they have read.
Our times tables superhero challenge also continues – a list is on the wall which the children need to add their name to and they will be tested. We will be working on them in class, but please take advantage of some of the activities available on line, in particular Times Table Rock Stars, which will support your child’s learning. Should you need a reminder about your child’s login details for this site, please let me know and I shall find it for you.
Swimming will take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, so please make sure that your child has suitable kit, including shorts for boys and swimming costumes for girls (no bikinis please) and a swimming cap and towel. Goggles are optional but should be clearly labelled with name and year group. All students must remove their own earrings for these sessions.
